After 10 Years, the Whales Still Touch Us

PUENTE ABRIOCHO

Words not able
No softer sweetness available in the world
Than the petal pink of inside baby whale mouth
Velvet in all that water

Her eye with no tragedy yet
But not without questions
If weeping weren't an option
I know only this response:

To summon a place where we hope to return
To specify memories' edge
To soften its curve and see a reflection of our own contours
And part ambiguously with so much of ourselves changed we are not sure we parted

The intimacy - pastel powerful in those waters
So vulnerable to our business elsewhere in this underhanded world
Bridges us to that life and opens our eyes however filled with tears
And demands words as strategic and strong as any touch

Kate is painting watercolors
Each brush stroke a mastery of skill, habit and tenderness
If only the words that swirl around my heart could be as ordered as her images,
or James' birds or Tom's stars over Aegea

To be with those who have spoken on behalf
Was as awesome to me
As the magnificent
Open eyed whales and their sea

I was there with my son, and I saw the magic in his face …the sheer joy of it has never left me, and I know it has never left my son.
