After 10 Years, the Whales Still Touch Us

Michael N. Weiss

Michael N. Weiss, the son of NRDC supporter Gary Weiss, visited the whale sanctuary several times and donated his bar mitzvah money to NRDC's Save the Gray Whale Nursery campaign. Michael, now 15 years old, is working as an intern with eco-travel company Baja Discovery this season.

The Whales

The sun shines bright
As the waves crash
As the people wait
For a sudden splash

Hopes begin to fade
Perhaps they retreated?
The good spirit of the seekers
Is nearly defeated

Suddenly, a sound
Of blowing air
All at once
They abandon their seats

As a large form
Breaking the surface
Draws near the boat
Moving with purpose

The creature approaches
The waiting crowd
The people become excited
And their hearts pound

One small child
Reaches out his arm
Contact is made
There is no harm

The whale begins to roll
As the child strokes its face
Why can't we all live
In such a wonderful place?

But even this cannot forever last
And the magnificent being must depart
But the whale will never leave
That child's heart

I was there with my son, and I saw the magic in his face …the sheer joy of it has never left me, and I know it has never left my son.
