I am outraged that the Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks Commission passed a draft resolution at its December meeting to expedite the delisting process for the grizzly bear.

Grizzly bear populations in the region are nowhere close to recovery levels, especially in the Northern Continental Divide ecosystem and the Cabinet Yaak ecosystem. For example, in the Cabinet Yaak ecosystem, grizzly bear deaths have exceeded allowable levels in 6 out of the last 10 years.  And in the Northern Continental Divide ecosystem, grizzly bear deaths have breached allowable limits in 10 of the last 11 years.

Endangered species protection is vital to the future survival of the grizzly bears, and without it, the grizzly could go extinct as it has in 99 percent of its former range in the lower 48 states.

Instead of facilitating the grizzly bear's delisting, I urge you to protect its habitat, expand linkages between habitat areas, reduce human-caused mortality through garbage management and public education, and improve efforts to catch poachers.
