I urge you to grant Poplar River First Nation's request for permanent protection of its traditional lands. The Poplar River First Nation completed its land use plan and then formally asked for permanent protection in March 2006. The old-growth woodlands and clear waters of this region -- an irreplaceable part of the world's unspoiled, intact boreal forest ecosystem -- are of global importance and deserve permanent protection.

As you know, indigenous communities have identified conservation opportunities all across Canada's boreal forest and the Poplar River First Nation has been at the forefront of this vision. I appreciate your government's leadership in supporting the Poplar River First Nation's planning initiative, as well as all efforts to keep hydropower transmission corridors out of these boreal lands.

The time has come for Manitoba to strengthen its commitment by granting permanent protection of the Asatiwisipe Aki Traditional Lands under the Manitoba Parks Act, as requested by the Poplar River First Nation. I urge the Manitoba government to sign and enact the regulation for permanent protection and demonstrate your commitment as good stewards of remaining boreal forest lands.
