Senate blocks oil drilling in Arctic Refuge

Following a year of unprecedented pressure from BioGems Defenders and other NRDC activists, including an eleventh-hour flood of phone calls to Capitol Hill, 44 senators filibustered a defense spending bill that would have opened the Arctic Refuge to massive oil development.

Pro-drilling senators then removed the Arctic drilling provision, setting the stage for swift passage of the defense spending bill. This victory followed on the heels of another crucial reprieve for the Arctic Refuge, when 22 Republican representatives vowed in November to vote against their own party's budget if it called for Arctic drilling.
