Leatherback turtles in Costa Rica safe for now

Costa Rica's Legislative National Assembly completed its session without voting on a controversial bill to downgrade the status of Las Baulas National Marine Park. The bill would have threatened the park's critical nesting beaches for endangered leatherback turtles. More than 16,000 letters of opposition from BioGems Defenders and an intervention by former Costa Rican President Abel Pacheco helped to persuade the National Assembly not to act on the bill. NRDC will strongly encourage incoming President Laura Chinchilla to take decisive action to provide permanent protection for Las Baulas and its leatherback turtles.
