Court upholds protection for polar bears

A federal judge affirms that polar bears should be protected throughout their range as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act. The state of Alaska, industry groups and the trophy-hunting lobby sought to strip the bear of its federal protection, which was conferred in 2008 following legal action by NRDC and our allies. The ruling is a big setback for those special interests that find the bear's plight inconvenient.
