Agreement reached to protect whales from sonar

For years, NRDC has worked to protect whales from the deadly effects of mid-frequency sonar, including heading to court to challenge the Navy's refusal to take commonsense measures during sonar training exercises. NRDC and the Navy have finally reached an agreement which commits the Navy to complete full environmental reviews on major training exercises around the world. The Navy must also disclose previously classified information regarding its sonar use and fund nearly $15 million in new marine mammal research. BioGems Defenders have played a critical part in this victory by sending tens of thousands of messages urging the Navy to adopt precautions to protect marine mammals from mid-frequency sonar, which has been shown to cause numerous whale strandings and deaths around the world.
