Interim protection for whitebark pine forests in Greater Yellowstone

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agrees with NRDC that the wide-ranging whitebark pine tree faces an “imminent” risk of extinction due to climate change. The announcement comes in response to a petition we filed in 2008 asking that the tree be listed as an endangered species. While the service has postponed a full-fledged listing due to budget restrictions, it has added the tree to its candidate list, which will give it special interim protection.
